Automation Engineer - Waikato/Hamilton

You won’t be pigeon-holed in this role and you won’t be stuck behind a desk. You’ll be hands-on with automation systems, supporting the design, programming, and commissioning of control systems for water and wastewater projects. Working closely with senior automation engineers and project teams, you’ll help deliver robust, reliable, and efficient solutions —from concept to commissioning.

 Please note, this role is full-time, permanent, and requires occasional travel to sites across New Zealand.

The successful applicant will:

  • Assist in developing and modifying PLC and HMI code (Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens, or Codesys) under the guidance of senior engineers
  • Participate in system testing and commissioning activities, including FATs and SATs, recording results and troubleshooting under supervision
  • Support control system design by preparing documentation, I/O lists, and drawings in line with company standards
  • Help maintain and improve standard automation libraries and documentation templates
  • Contribute to identifying automation opportunities and improving existing control systems
  • Ensure all automation deliverables meet required quality and safety standards
  • Communicate project status and issues clearly to project engineers and senior team members
  • Build open and positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

 

We want someone who:

  • Holds or is completing a degree in Mechatronics, or Automation Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Preferably has 1–3 years’ experience in industrial automation (water, manufacturing, or process industries preferred)
  • Has exposure to PLC/HMI programming environments (e.g., Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider EcoStruxure, Siemens TIA Portal)
  • Is familiar with Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, or Structured Text programming languages
  • Understands the basics of industrial networks and instrumentation
  • Enjoys solving problems and working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Has strong communication skills, a proactive mindset, and a desire to keep learning
  • Is willing to travel occasionally for commissioning and site support work
  • Brings enthusiasm, curiosity, and a passion for delivering great results — while having fun along the way!
