Senior Civil Engineer (Mechanical)

You won’t be pigeonholed in this role - but you also won’t be stuck living on site or in the office. As a Senior Civil Engineer at Apex, you’ll take ownership of engineering delivery across projects from concept through to detailed design, technical assurance, and construction support, ensuring outcomes meet required quality standards, programme expectations, and client requirements.

This role is predominantly office-based, where you’ll provide strong technical leadership and design input across the project lifecycle, with site visits and construction observation undertaken as required. You’ll work alongside a highly qualified, talented, and passionate multidisciplinary team delivering complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects across Aotearoa.

Please note: this role is full-time, permanent, based in Timaru or Auckland, and requires travel to sites as needed.

The successful applicant will:

  • Build strong, open relationships with clients, contractors, suppliers, and internal teams to support successful project outcomes
  •
  • Co-ordinate closely with mechanical, electrical, and process disciplines to ensure integrated, buildable design solutions.
  • Identify and manage design risks, constructability issues and discipline interfaces early in the design process.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables meet required quality, regulatory, and New Zealand standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to project teams, including mentoring junior engineers and designers.
  • Support construction activities through technical input and construction observation when required.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date design documentation, calculations and reports.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives to improve future project delivery.

We want someone who:

  • Holds a degree in civil engineering or a related discipline (BE or equivalent).
  • Has 7+ years’ relevant experience delivering civil design from concept through to detailed design.
  • Brings strong experience in earthworks, drainage, and utility design, ideally within water or wastewater infrastructure.
  • Has experience coordinating civil and structural designs with mechanical systems, plant, and equipment.
  • Has a solid understanding of the end-to-end project lifecycle, with a strong focus on design delivery and technical assurance.
  • Is well-versed in civil construction principles and understands how designs translate to site.
  • Communicates  learly and confidently across disciplines, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Is comfortable working independently while contributing positively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Is willing to travel to project sites as required.
  • Is passionate about delivering high-quality outcomes for clients and enjoys working with a team that takes pride in what they do.
