Apex awarded significant contract with Southland District Council
This investment represents a major milestone in improving water quality and long-term sustainability for the Manapouri community.
For this project, Apex has designed a bespoke, modular treatment solution that integrates Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactors (MABR) with a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR). The stageable system is tailored to meet nutrient, solids and disinfection requirements without the need for additional tertiary treatment, while also enhancing overall performance and resilience.
MABR technology continues to gain momentum in New Zealand due to its exceptional energy efficiency, ability to handle variable loading, and reduced operational input. Watercare has played a key role in its adoption, with Apex Water currently delivering full MABR-MBR upgrades at the Raglan and Meremere treatment plants.
The Manapouri facility will combine high-efficiency aeration with integrated membrane filtration, delivering robust performance across seasonal load variations and reliable operation at lower temperatures than traditional biological systems. The upgrade also includes the installation of two Passavant Noggerath headworks screens manufactured by Aqseptence Group, for which Apex is the exclusive distributor in New Zealand’s municipal sector.
This project will deliver an upgraded treatment plant designed to serve the Manapouri community for decades to come.
