Safe Drinking Water Restored for Havelock with Apex UV Treatment Plant.
Apex Water successfully completed the design, construction and commissioning of a UV treatment plant for the Havelock community, working with the Marlborough District Council.
The project scope included the design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of a temporary ultraviolet (UV) treatment plant beside the existing chlorine system. The container was placed on earthworks which included a 1.7m-high platform to protect against Kaituna River flooding.
The Havelock container is an automated ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system designed to reliably and automatically supply drinking water compliant with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards (NZDWS) and specifically meet the requirements of section 5.16 (Ultraviolet Light Disinfection) and section 43.5 (Disinfection Complaince Criterion 5).
The treatment process is based around a single unit process: two (2) duty/standby Trojan Do6 UV disinfection units, to achieve a total of 4-to9 protozoal treatment validated using the USEPA UV Disinfection guidance manual.
From order to full commissioning, Apex delivered this project in just 7 weeks. Thanks to the smooth delivery and collaboration, the Council lifted the town’s boil water notice in early October 2025—well ahead of the permanent water treatment plant’s completion in 2028.
A great outcome for the community and just in time for the busy visitor season.
